What Is Liposuction?

Certain localized fat deposits are genetically programmed to resist diet and exercise, no matter how disciplined you are. Liposuction is the most effective surgical procedure for permanently removing those fat cells, reshaping your contour and restoring proportion. It’s not a weight-loss procedure; it’s precision sculpting, performed by inserting a cannula through small incisions and gently suctioning fat from the treatment area.

At Lazaderm, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Laura McNaughton performs advanced tumescent liposuction, using techniques that reduce the downtime, bruising, and risk typically associated with traditional liposuction.

Our Approach to Liposuction

Our microcannula and tumescent liposuction techniques can remove more fat in shorter periods with better control by the surgeon, delivering smoother results with smaller incisions than traditional liposuction.
Lazaderm is the only provider in the Sioux Falls region offering microcannula liposuction. These ultra-fine instruments create smaller incisions, enable smoother contouring and leave scars that typically fade or become nearly invisible over time.

Our tumescent technique infuses a specialized solution into fatty tissue before fat removal, which dramatically reduces bleeding, bruising and recovery time. It also allows you to stay awake throughout the procedure, eliminating the risks associated with general anesthesia.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Laura McNaughton leads every procedure, bringing specialized training in aesthetic plastic surgery and body contouring alongside multiple Siouxland’s Choice Awards for Best Plastic/Cosmetic Surgery. Medical director Dr. Lornell E. Hansen II, who trained directly under Dr. Jeffrey Klein (the inventor of tumescent liposuction), ensures every protocol reflects that pioneering standard.

From pre-operative planning through months of follow-up, our team manages every phase of your care.

Types of Liposuction We Offer

Tumescent Liposuction: The gold-standard technique. A specialized solution of saline, local anesthetic, and epinephrine is infused into the fatty tissue before fat removal. This reduces bleeding and bruising, and lets you remain awake under local anesthesia rather than using general anesthesia. Ideal for most body areas and patient types, with maximum safe fat removal volumes typically limited to 4–5 liters per session.

Micro-Cannula Liposuction: Takes the tumescent approach further with ultra-fine cannulas for exceptional precision and smooth, natural-looking contours. The tiny incision points result in minimal scarring that fades significantly, making this technique excellent for delicate areas like the neck, chin, and upper arms where visible scarring would be undesirable.

Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL): Uses a vibrating cannula. The mechanical oscillation of the cannula reduces the physical effort required from the surgeon and allows easier penetration through fibrous or dense tissue. PAL is particularly effective for challenging areas like the male chest, the back, and revision procedures

Suction-Assisted Liposuction (SAL): The most traditional liposuction method, in which the surgeon manually moves the cannula to break up and suction out fat. This technique may require general anesthesia for larger volume cases and can involve more bruising than tumescent approaches.

Laser-Assisted Liposuction: Marketed under brands like SmartLipo, laser assisted liposuction uses laser technology to coagulate fat and disrupt fat cells before removal. It may offer some skin tightening benefits but carries risks of thermal damage and burns, and costs tend to be higher than tumescent-only methods.

Renuvion-Assisted Liposuction: An advanced skin-tightening technology combining helium plasma and radiofrequency energy to enhance skin contraction after liposuction. Ideal for patients seeking treatment for mild to moderate skin laxity to complement and enhance their liposuction results.

Liposuction Treatment Areas

  • Abdomen and waist, including the flanks and love handles
  • Hips and thighs, both inner and outer
  • Arms and back, including bra bulge and upper back fat
  • Neck and chin, including submental (double chin) liposuction
  • Male-specific areas, including gynecomastia and male abdominal fat, which differs from female fat distribution in density and location

Who Is a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

Ideal candidates are healthy adults within about 30 pounds of their normal weight, with stubborn fat deposits that haven’t responded to consistent diet and exercise and good skin elasticity, since skin needs to retract and conform to your new contour for the best results. Liposuction doesn’t improve cellulite or address skin laxity on its own; patients with significant loose skin may benefit from pairing it with a procedure like a tummy tuck. Non-smokers, or those willing to quit well before and after the procedure, see the best healing outcomes. Contraindications include significant cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled diabetes, bleeding disorders, active infection, and very high BMI. Patients in that last category are often better served by a dedicated weight loss program first.

Before, During & After Liposuction: What to Expect

Before Your Procedure

Comprehensive medical clearance includes lab work and a medication review, stopping NSAIDs and blood thinners that could increase bleeding risk. Your provider confirms your candidacy and treatment plan at your consultation.

During Your Procedure

Tumescent solution is injected into the treatment area first, numbing it and constricting blood vessels to minimize bleeding. Because you’re awake under local anesthesia, Dr. McNaughton can reposition you during the procedure for real-time contouring, a level of control not possible under general anesthesia.

After Your Procedure

You’ll wear a compression garment continuously at first, then nightly for several additional weeks, to support your new contour and control swelling.

Full results become visible within 3 to 6 months as residual swelling resolves and skin fully retracts around your new contour.

Safety and Risk Management

Our tumescent technique is specifically designed to minimize bleeding through epinephrine-induced vasoconstriction, and using local rather than general anesthesia removes an entire category of systemic risk. Common risks include infection and contour irregularities, occurring in roughly 2 to 9% of cases depending on technique and surgeon experience. Serious complications, including deep vein thrombosis, organ perforation, fat embolism, or significant fluid shifts, are rare. Follow-up appointments let Dr. McNaughton monitor your healing and catch any concerns early.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do liposuction results last?

Liposuction removes fat cells that don’t grow back, so results in treated areas are permanent as long as you maintain a stable weight. If you gain weight afterward, remaining fat cells in the treated areas can expand.

Will I have visible scarring?

Minimal scarring is one of the biggest advantages of microcannula liposuction. Incision points are just 1 to 3mm, barely larger than a needle puncture, and strategic placement in natural skin creases makes them virtually invisible for most patients over time.

Can liposuction help with weight loss?

No. Liposuction is a body contouring procedure, not a weight-loss method. It’s designed to remove fat from specific areas rather than reduce overall body weight. Fat removal is typically limited to 4 to 5 liters in a single session for safety.

How soon can I return to exercise?

Most patients return to light activity and desk work within 3 to 7 days. Full exercise should wait until 4 to 6 weeks post-procedure, depending on the extent of your treatment.

Is liposuction painful?

The tumescent technique helps to keep you comfortable during the procedure, as the local anesthetic in the solution numbs the treatment area. Afterward, pain and soreness may last a few days and is managed effectively with prescribed medication.

Can multiple areas be treated simultaneously?

Yes, though safety considerations guide how much can be done in one session. Dr. McNaughton carefully plans the scope of each procedure to keep operative time and fluid management within safe limits, sometimes staging larger plans across two sessions.

What about non-surgical alternatives?

Non-surgical options like CoolSculpting can address smaller areas of fat without incisions. For more dramatic or precise results, especially in larger areas, liposuction remains the gold standard. Dr. McNaughton can help determine which approach best fits your goals at your consultation.

Can liposuction address loose skin or cellulite?

No. Liposuction doesn’t improve the appearance of cellulite or remove excess skin. Patients with significant skin laxity may benefit from pairing liposuction with a procedure like a tummy tuck.

Dr. Hansen is wonderful! I’ve had excellent results with Botox (he’s the region’s top doc for Allergan products and does more injections than any other professional in the area) which means he is very practiced and quite particular about results. He’s very congenial, meticulous and dedicated to achieving your goals for an improved appearance. Nothing against other medical/beauty spas in this market but I would highly recommend a visit to Dr. Hansen, you’ll not be disappointed. He’s the best in the business!
