Melasma
Melasma appears as patches of dark pigmentation, most often on the cheeks, temples, upper lip, chin, and forehead. It’s far more common in women than men, and is sometimes referred to as the “mask of pregnancy,” though it can develop for reasons unrelated to pregnancy as well.

Skin of color is more prone to melasma simply due to having more melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells responsible for the condition. Having a family member with melasma increases your own likelihood of developing it. Two triggers matter most: sun exposure, since UV light from the sun or tanning beds stimulates melanocytes to overproduce pigment in affected areas, which is why many patients notice improvement in winter and worsening in summer; and hormonal changes, including pregnancy, birth control pills, and hormone replacement therapy.
Prevention
Wearing sunblock daily on all sun-exposed skin is the most important defense against melasma. It should contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, ideally at a concentration of at least 7%. Some providers believe that even sun exposure to areas like the legs can affect melasma on the face, so full-body sun protection is worth considering.
