Hair grows in cycles, and at any given time, only a portion of your hair is in the active growth phase, called the Anagen phase. Temporary methods like shaving and waxing only address hair at the surface and do nothing to affect future growth, which is why regrowth happens so quickly and why some people develop ingrown hairs or irritation from repeated removal. Genetics, hormones, and hair thickness all influence how much hair grows in a given area and how it responds to treatment.

Genetics and hormones determine where and how much hair your body produces. It is not possible to change those blueprints. Laser hair removal, however, comes close, dramatically reducing growth with each successive session. In the meantime, you can keep your skin smooth and cut down on irritation between laser sessions by exfoliating before you shave, using a sharp razor with shaving cream, and shaving in the direction your hair grows.
