Nevus Of Ota
Nevus of Ota is a hyperpigmented lesion that forms around the eye, sometimes including the eye itself. Coloring ranges from brown to slate gray to deep blue, depending on how far beneath the skin surface the pigmented cells sit. The condition is more common in women and in patients of Asian or African descent, though it can appear in anyone regardless of ethnicity.

Nevus of Ota
Nevus of Ota occurs when melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing your skin’s pigment, cluster in unusually high concentrations in the layers of skin around the eye. In some cases, the pigmentation extends to the sclera (the white of the eye), the forehead, the temple or the cheek. Nevus of Ota is either present at birth or first occurs during puberty, when hormonal shifts can trigger dormant melanocytes into activity. It is not caused by injury, sun exposure or anything environmental.
How We Treat Nevus of Ota
Skin Care
Topical creams containing hydroquinone and vitamin A derivatives, such as the Obagi NuDerm or ZO Skincare systems, can help reduce the appearance of Nevus of Ota, though they won’t cure it and cannot be used directly on the eyelids.
