Uneven skin is a common concern among patients. As we age, chronic sun exposure, unhealthy lifestyle choices, hormonal changes and genetics, all contribute to the physical signs of aging. This accumulated damage depletes our natural stores of melanin and the skin becomes blotchy and uneven. Sun and age spots form, becoming progressively darker and more noticeable over time, making our skin appear older, sometimes older than we actually are.

By effectively applying pulsed light heat directly through the underlying layer of the skin’s surface, the BBL is able to penetrate those deeper cells and stimulate the production of collagen, promoting your skin’s own natural rejuvenation process. The photothermal energy from the BBL will also eliminate fine vessels that cause redness and reduce uneven pigmentation and discoloration. The pigmented areas will darken at first, gradually fading and lightening as healing occurs. The complexion is rejuvenated – appearing even with improved color and luminosity.

Your skin will continue its restoration in the weeks to follow, revealing vibrant, smoother, and younger looking skin. When both red and brown pigment are present in the skin a combination of BBL treatments may be used to correct both color inconsistencies, for exceptional overall clarity.

Frequently Asked Broadband Light (BBL) Questions
The BBL delivers light energy to the upper layers of skin. The light energy is absorbed by specific targets, such as pigmentation, and fine broken vessels that cause redness and brown spots in the skin. The energy from the IPL (intense pulsed light) will destroy the target, eliminating it from the skin and restoring it to its natural beauty, blending its natural tones, and making it more vibrant and youthful. The BBL light energy will also induce new collagen and elastin to be formed in the skin. This will give the appearance of more youthful and firm skin.
• Pigmented Lesions (freckles, age spots, melasma) • Vascular Lesions (small blood vessels, rosacea and other micro-capillary flushing conditions) • Uneven skin texture • Acne
Any area of your body can be treated. The most popular treatment areas are face, neck, décolleté, shoulders and back of hands.
An active tan from either the sun or tanning beds is not appropriate for treating with BBL. Tanned skin has a lot of pigment or melanin that may also absorb the light energy. We recommend that a person refrains from sun exposure for a minimum of three weeks prior to their BBL treatment. Self-tanners must be faded from the skin for at least ten days prior to treatment.
The number of treatments will vary from person to person depending on the severity of the damage. We will usually recommend a minimum of three treatments spaced two weeks apart for correction of sun damaged skin. Our clinicians may also combine your treatment with other aesthetic procedures to further enhance your outcome. After your initial three to five corrective treatments, we recommend that you start Forever Young BBL treatments.
Your eyes will be protected with laser eye shields. You will briefly feel a “warm rubber band snap” sensation as the light is absorbed by the targeted areas. Your treatment may take anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes depending on the size of the area(s) we will be treating. Most patients tolerate the treatment without difficulty. Occasionally, we may need to apply a topical anesthetic to the treatment area.
You will experience some redness, with most of the redness resolving shortly after the procedure. Some clients may notice mild swelling in the skin or around the eyes (that should resolve in a couple days). You can apply make-up and sunblock immediately after treatment. Pigmented lesions will darken and gradually flake off and fade over seven to fourteen days.
SUNBLOCK! One of our clinicians will help decide what sunblock is best for you based on your lifestyle. Remember, the number one cause of aging in the skin is UV exposure from the sun or tanning beds. The better you care for your skin the longer your results will last.
