Kybella is a prescription medicine used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called “double chin.” It is also the only FDA-approved injectable treatment that destroys fat cells under the chin to improve your profile.

Kybella is the first treatment of it's kind and is the only FDA-approved injectable used to treat fat cells under your chin, also known as submental fullness. Submental fullness can be caused by weight gain, genetics and aging. In many instances, you do not have to be overweight to have a double chin.  For others, despite how much they exercise or diet, the double chin will not go away. Kybella is perfect for enhancing your profile; many men and women alike enjoy using the injections as it's non-invasive and there isn't any down time post appointment.

The Kybella works by destroying the fat cells in the double chin, and is a synthetic deoxycholic acid. The deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule already present in the body, and aids in the break down of fat. Once the Kybella is introduced to the chin area, the cells can no longer store fat, so additional treatment is not needed once the desired look is reached. During the appointment, which can last between 15-20 minutes, there are multiple small injections placed into the double chin.  Since profiles vary from person to person, your physician will have a consultation appointment with you to review your profile, amount of submental fullness, and your desired overall profile. Each treatment is given one month apart, not to exceed six treatments total. Furthermore, the physician will create a tailored treatment plan based on your personal profile, resulting in the best results possible.

Frequently Asked Kybella Questions
Kybella is an injectable formulation of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorptions of fat. When injected into areas of unwanted fat, Kybella causes the destruction of fat cells. In 2015 the FDA approved the use of Kybella to treat submental fat, otherwise known as a double chin. Kybella should only be injected by licensed medical professionals under the supervision of a physician.
The deoxycholic acid is injected into moderate to severe pockets of unwanted fat underneath the chin. Kybella begins to target and destroy the fat cells. Deoxycholic acid is naturally produced in our body and helps absorb fats.
Kybella is most commonly used for the removal of fat underneath the chin called submental fat. You may hear it called a “double chin”. Any other areas treated with Kybella have not been studied and are considered an “off-label” use. There are other areas being studied for possible treatment such as the bra roll, banana roll (the area under the buttock), axillary fat (armpit) both anterior and posterior, and even lower eye fat pads.
There are multiple factors in the numbers of sessions needed. The factors include the amount of fat to be removed, the client’s immune system and health and the number of vials used per session. The average session will use two to three vials. Most patients will require two to three sessions but some may require up to six sessions. The sessions will be spaced four to six weeks apart.
If you have a double chin or another small area of stubborn fat where you want more contour and definition, then consider Kybella a safe alternative to liposuction and surgery. Liposuction typically requires one session, and is generally a better choice if someone has a larger amount of fat to remove from the treatment area.
There is some swelling right after Kybella treatment, which typically is most prominent in the first two to three days and is typically completely resolved in a week. After day three, most swelling is not noticeable to others. There may be bruising that may be visible for seven to ten days. Over the following month, you may feel (but not see) some bumps under the skin of the treated area. This firmness signifies Kybella is working to dissolve the fat. Once the fat is dissolved, your body will naturally absorb the fat cells.
The results gained with Kybella are considered long term and the fat will not return once dissolved as long as the patient’s remains stable. FDA studies show maintenance of improvement at five years after treatment when patients maintained a stable weight.
There is little pain during the Kybella procedure. We will use ice to numb the area and if the client prefers, we can apply a topical numbing medicine to decrease the discomfort from the injections. There is a slight burning sensation when the product is administered and this will generally resolve within a few minutes. We recommend that you ice the treatment area while in the office. There is some pain associated with the reaction that causes the fat breakdown. This is not severe but may cause the area to become tender.
Kybella is an incredibly quick and easy “lunchtime” procedure. Most patients are in and out within 30 minutes, with most of the time being used to allow the topical numbing to work. We also recommend that you ice the area about ten minutes while in the clinic.
There are possible complications with any treatment, and patients need to know that before choosing to have a cosmetic procedure. However, when working with a professional, Kybella is an incredibly safe option. To ensure patient safety, Kybella is only available to physicians who have undergone a special training program to learn about recommended techniques, proper dosages, and indicated uses. Kybella should only be injected by licensed medical professionals under the supervision of a physician.
