Botox for Under Eye Wrinkles: Yea or Nay

As our patients hit 30, one of their biggest concerns is often aging around the eyes. Fine lines, wrinkles and hollowness or dark under eye circles start appearing more pronounced.

Hollowness and dark circles under the eyes can cause one to look tired or not well-rested. No matter how much sleep a person gets, the problem seems unresolved.

One of our board-certified aesthetic doctors talks about how that hollowness and lines can appear less visible.

Can you use Botox under your eyes?

Botox, a botulinum toxin type A, is among the most popular aesthetic procedures in Chandler, used to improve one’s appearance. While fillers add volume to plump the treated areas, Botox paralyzes certain muscles and leaves smoother-looking and refreshed skin.

Injecting Botox to treat dark under eye circles or hollowness is an off-label use in the US. The FDA hasn’t approved the use of Botox under the eyes for cosmetic purposes. Few studies have looked into the effectiveness of Botox for under-eye treatments and doctors are conservative about its result to treat eye wrinkles.

Potential Side Effects

The area is very delicate, so there is a high risk of having Botox injected around the eyes. Side effects include:

-Difficulty closing the eyes

-Eye drooping

-Eye numbness

-Swelling of the lower eyelid making the eyes look puffier.

Other known side effects of Botox include:

-Bleeding

-Bruising

-Dizziness

-Fainting

-Pain at the injection site

-Redness

Botox Alternatives for Under-Eye Treatment

“The best way to address the under eyes problem is the use of dermal fillers,” says the Lazaderm doctor. Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane are the go-tos. The dermal fillers fill in the shadow and reduce the appearance of dark circles. If you develop mild swelling under the eyes or eye puffiness, fillers and fat transfers can also help blend the swelling and remove the excess fat from under the eye.

Laser treatments can also be used to tighten the skin or to brighten the dark/blueish colors.
