What Is BOTOX®?

BOTOX is a simple, non-surgical, physician-administered treatment that can temporarily smooth moderate to severe lines. One 10 minute treatment, a few tiny BOTOX injections, and within days, you can notice a visible improvement in the lines.

BOTOX works when injected directly into the muscle. It blocks the release of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. By blocking the neurotransmitter from being released, the nerve cannot tell the muscle to contract and the muscle stays relaxed. This will then allow the skin to heal itself over time.

The Most Common Botox Injection Sites

Below is a list of the most common areas for Botox injections, number of Botox units needed, as well as the benefits and risks for each area. The average number of units of Botox will vary from person to person. The total number of units of Botox will depend on the number of areas treated.

Frown Lines (Glabellum)

Lines that develop between your eyebrows when you frown. Everyone does it, but as we age, these furrows can etch into our skin and sometimes even become deep furrows. Some people call them their 11’s.

  • Benefits: Botox injections can relax the muscles and over time the skin can heal itself making the lines go away.
  • Botox Units Needed: The amount of Botox needed for the frown lines varies significantly from person to person. It can range from as few as 9 units to as high as 40 units.
  • Risks: eyelid ptosis is when the Botox affects the small muscle that raises the upper eyelid. Your central brows can drop giving you an angry look. You can also see what we call “Spock” brows. The muscle that lifts the outer brows becomes too active and raises the outer brow too high.

Forehead Lines (Frontalis Muscle)

These are the horizontal lines that run across your forehead. The results of years of raising your eyebrows.

  • Benefits: Forehead Botox injections can relax this muscle softening the wrinkles. A good injector, will allow some movement while still improving the wrinkles.
  • Botox Units Needed: 6 to 8 units in a younger patient, up to 20 units and occasionally more.
  • Risks: the brows can drop lower making the brows feel heavy.

Crow's Feet

These are the lines that develop next to your eyes and come from smiling or squinting your eyes.

  • Benefits: Botox injections can relax the muscle to the lateral eye that will decrease the crow’s feet.
  • Botox Units needed: This can be as few as 4 units per side to as much as 16 units per side.
  • Risks: uncommon with treatment of this area, but if someone poorly injects or injects too much, it can affect your smile.

Eyebrow Lift

As we age we lose volume in our face including bone. This tends to allow our brows to sit lower than they did when we were younger.

  • Benefits: Botox injections can relax the muscle that pulls down on the corner of the eyebrow. That allows the muscles above to raise the eyebrow. The changes are subtle but can be from 2 to 5 millimeters.
  • Botox Units Needed: This will range from 2 to 6 units per side.
  • Risks: this is also a low risk area but if done incorrectly, it could cause the brows or the eyelids to fall.

Downturned Mouth and Marionette Lines

There are 2 primary muscles that pull down on the corners of our mouth. This can lead to the corners of the mouth turning down but also cause marionette lines or puppet lines.

  • Benefits: Botox injections into the correct muscle, called the depressor anguli oris (DAO), will relax. This allows the corners of the mouth to lift. It may also decrease the depth of the marionette lines.
  • Botox Units Needed: 3 to 8 units per side.
  • Risks: Could affect the muscle right next to the DAO giving you an asymmetric smile.

Bunny Lines

Scrunch your nose and you will see “bunny lines” form. Laughing and smiling can etch these wrinkles into the skin on the nose permanently.

  • Benefits: Botox Injections relax the nasalis muscle decreasing the amount of bunny lines when we smile.
  • Botox Units Needed: This will generally take 4 to 8 units for good results.
  • Risks: Bunny line injections are safe and are difficult to cause issues.

Gummy Smile

This is when a significant portion of your gums show when you smile. The upper lip raises too high. In general, no more than 2 millimeters of gums should show.

  • Benefits: Botox injections can weaken the muscles that raise your upper lip when you smile. You will have less of your gums showing when you smile.
  • Botox Units needed: Generally this will need 4 to 8 units.
  • Risks: Asymmetry is possible which could give you a crooked smile.

Dimpled Chin

You will hear people call this golf ball chin, cobble stone chin or peau d’ orange which means orange peel. The muscle under the skin called the mentalis muscle “dimples” the chin and over time the dimples can become permanent.

  • Benefits: Botox injections can relax the mentalis muscle which is the one that “dimples” the chin. This will allow the skin to relax and become smoother.
  • Botox Units Needed: This will require between 4 to 12 units.
  • Risks: If injected poorly, this can affect a muscle that pulls down on your mouth when you smile. It can make your smile lopsided.

Lip Lines

These are the lines that can form in your upper and lower lip as you age. Many people call them smoker’s lines although the majority of patients have never smoked.

  • Benefits: Botox injections can relax the muscles so that you will not be able to pucker as much as usual. This will allow the wrinkles to soften but deeper wrinkles will NOT go away.
  • Botox Units Needed: 2 up to 8 units for the upper lip and the same for the lower lip.
  • Risks: This is an area of concern and you will want an experienced injector. Too little Botox and it will not work. Too much and it can affect your speech and even how you suck on a straw.

Masseters

This is the large muscle along the back of the jaw line. For some individuals it can give their face a square shape. Others will use it for grinding their teeth and TMJ relief.

  • Benefits: Botox injections can weaken the muscle enough and over time it will shrink in size.
  • Botox Units Needed: 15 to 25 units per side.
  • Risks: A low risk area for injections. If injected wrong, it may affect the parotid gland which produces saliva causing dry mouth.

Lip Flip

This is for patients that want more fullness to their lips. Primarily used for the upper lip.

  • Benefits: Botox injections can weaken the muscle at the edge of the lip. This allows the lip to “roll out” giving the appearance of fuller lips. You will not receive the same benefits as a dermal filler.
  • Botox Units Needed: generally will need 2 to 6 units
  • Risks: This is the same issue as when injecting for lip lines but is a different technique.

Jaw Line

Some individuals get sagging along their jaw line. The platysma muscle pulls down on the “jowls” making them appear worse.

  • Benefits: Botox injections can relax the platysma muscle, improving the jowls and creating a “stronger” or snatched jaw line. This will not benefit people with heavy or significant jowling.
  • Botox Units Needed: 12 to 18 units per side
  • Risks: this is also a low-risk area. The biggest risk is that it does not work for you.

Neck Bands

This is the same muscle listed above pulls down on our lower face. Over time the muscle called the platysma muscle can split. This allows bands to develop that run from the jaw line all the way down the neck.

  • Benefits: Botox injections can relax the muscle and make the neck bands less prominent. For some, it will improve the lax skin under their jaw.
  • Botox Units needed: 6 to 20 units per platysma band
  • Risks: If done correctly, it is low risk but their have been reports of some patients having difficulty swallowing.

Hyperhidrosis

This is excessive sweating and can occur in the arm pits but sometimes in the hands and the feet.

  • Benefits: Botox injections can decrease excessive sweating
  • Botox Units Needed: 50 units per side
  • Risks: low risk of side effects.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lazaderm Treatments

What are the side effects of BOTOX®?

The most common side effects include headache, respiratory infection, flu symptoms, temporary eyelid droop, and nausea. In addition, there may be some temporary soreness around the injection area.

During your initial consultation, the doctor will examine your targeted area and recommend the best option available for you.

  • The injection is quick and painless
  • You will notice the result 3-10 days post-procedure
  • You may be advised to follow up 2 weeks after the procedure if you are new to Botox or you have had previous concerns with past injections.

Pre-Procedure Instruction for BOTOX®:

Avoid products containing aspirin or ibuprofen for ten days prior to treatment with BOTOX® in order to minimize any chances of bruising. Do NOT stop aspirin if it has been prescribed by your physician.

Post-Procedure Instruction for BOTOX®:

After treatment, you should remain upright for six hours. Keep your head as erect as possible during this time and avoid bending down.

For six hours after BOTOX® injection, avoid:

  • Rubbing the injection sites
  • Exercising
  • Wearing a hat or a headband
  • Washing or styling your hair

Don’t fly on an airplane for 2 days after BOTOX® treatment.

Exercise the injected area 10 times every 15 minutes for the first hour by squinting the eyes, frowning, or wrinkling the forehead depending on the area injected. These exercises help work the BOTOX® into the muscles to increase the effectiveness of treatment.

You may begin to see results within 48 to 72 hours. The optimum results will be reached at 7 to 10 days.

The duration of BOTOX® will vary from patient to patient. Typically, BOTOX® will last approximately 4 months once a patient has had consistent treatment. We tell our patients that the first treatment with BOTOX® will last about 2 and a half months, the second time about 3 months and after that every 3.5 to 4.5 months. We recommend that you stay up on your injections for the best results at eliminating wrinkles.

Although the results are visible, a treatment with BOTOX will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you “had the work” done. The muscle activity that causes the lines is simply reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases.

It will take time for your wrinkles to go away. The skin will often repair the wrinkles on it’s own with adequate and consistent treatment with Botox.vvvvvvvvvv

If you don’t continue treatments, the lines will gradually return and look like they did before treatment.
