Cutera Excel HR

The Cutera Excel HR is a dual-wavelength laser that can be safely used for laser hair removal on all skin types. The Excel HR laser contains two different lasers in one platform. The long-pulsed 1064nm Nd:YAG laser has the ability to treat all skin types (Fitzpatrick I-VI) including patients with darker skin including patients of African ancestry. The Nd:YAG is less suited for patients with lighter and fine hair. The Nd:YAG works best on dark coarse hair. The 755nm Alexandrite Laser is better suited for lighter skin types with lighter hair and light skin (Fitzpatrick I to IV).

The Cutera Excel HR has a built-in sapphire tip that can cool the skin to 4 degrees Celsius. The sapphire cooling tip is in contact with the skin for every pulse. This helps to protect the skin and decreases the discomfort associated by pre-cooling the skin before each laser pulse. Other lasers use may use cold air blown on the skin or they use a spray of cryogen coolant just before the laser pulse.

Palomar Vectus Laser

The Palomar Vectus Laser has unique features including a larger treatment tip with an advanced contact cooling system, which means pain-free treatments with no downtime. The Vectus Laser also has an FDA-cleared melanin reader, so we can customize treatments to your particular skin and hair type. This dedicated solution for high-volume hair removal provides fast, uniform, and permanent hair reduction for the widest range of skin and hair types. As one of the fastest forms of laser hair removal, the Vectus Laser is great for reducing hair from larger areas. Treatable areas include the back, shoulders, face, underarms, arms, legs, bikini area, and chest, to name just a few.

Frequently Asked Laser Hair Removal Questions

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in the hair with the laser. The laser energy is absorbed by the hair and transfers the energy to the hair bulb. The hair bulb is then destroyed permanently.

How many treatments are needed?

There are many variables that come into play including the location of the hair, the growth cycle of the hair, the amount of pigment in the hair, and the diameter of the hair. To effectively remove hair, most individuals will need five to eight treatments to see excellent results.

Who performs the laser hair removal procedure?

Dr. Hansen, MD; Brittany C. Wangsness, DNP, APRN, NP-C; Valerie Belding, PA-C, perform the laser hair removal procedures. Katie Magnison, our certified laser technician will treat patients in our Sioux City location.

Are there any side effects to laser hair removal?

There is no significant recovery downtime needed after laser hair removal. Many of our patients come in during their work day and return to work after treatment. Some patients may experience temporary redness and sunburn-type feeling to the treated areas. The sensation will dissipate within a few hours to a couple of days. In individuals with a darker complexion, there may be temporary darkening of the skin in the treated areas that will resolve within a month.

Are laser hair removal treatments painful?

Most patients tolerate the laser hair removal without significant discomfort. Patients state that it is minimal and is like a rubber band snapping their skin. Most patients feel that the discomfort is significantly less uncomfortable than waxing. Each of our lasers have cooling in the hand-pieces that decrease the sensation of each laser pulse.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

We prefer to use the term semi-permanent for our description of laser hair removal. Laser hair removal can reduce unwanted hair by 90% or more. Laser hair removal will cause the death of some hair follicles, however, some remaining hair will grow back but much lighter and softer. Some hair follicles have been shown to go dormant for up to a few years and then start to regrow. Each person’s experience will vary.

Does the hair need to be grown out in the area before the treatment?

No. We ask that you shave the area before treatment. We ask that you refrain from waxing, bleaching, tweezing, or alternate methods of hair removal two weeks before treatment.

Will I need to use any topical anesthetics before laser hair removal?

No. There isn’t a need for numbing cream prior to laser hair removal. The lasers come equipped with chilling plates which eliminate the need for topical anesthetics. We have found through many years of laser hair removal experience, that most patients do not feel the topical anesthetic creams are beneficial.

How long will each treatment session take?

This can vary widely. A small area such as the upper lip may take as little as five minutes. Other larger areas, like full legs or back, will take longer. The Palomar Vectus laser can treat a full man’s back in about twenty minutes.

Is laser hair removal safe?

Laser hair removal is very safe. All our lasers at Lazaderm are FDA approved for laser hair removal.

How long until I see results?

Most patients will start to see results after their first or second treatment with laser hair removal. This will vary for every person.

Is laser hair removal safe for darker skin?

Yes, we have lasers specifically meant to be used on darker skin tones.

How much does laser hair removal cost?

Laser hair removal prices will vary dependent on the size and complexity of the treatment area(s). We ask that you schedule a free consultation prior to treatment. At this consultation, our patient care coordinator and licensed medical team member can speak with you regarding the areas to be treated, how many treatments may be needed, and the price range. We offer laser hair removal packages, and if you buy four treatments you will receive your fifth treatment for free. Any other treatments to the same area as the purchased package will be at 50% off the current rate. We do not feel the need to charge you for a lifetime package and often will save you money.

Can any area be treated with laser hair removal?

We have completed laser hair removal on just about every area of the skin that grows hair. That includes ears, fingers, and even toes. We can not treat hairs that are within the orbit such as eyelashes.

Why is laser hair removal a better option than electrolysis?

With electrolysis each hair must be treated individually. A laser has a wider coverage and can penetrate many follicles with each pulse. Electrolysis can help eliminate fine and light hairs, but the result of laser hair removal is faster, less painful and more manageable.

Do I need to avoid the sun after treatment?

We will place sunblock on your skin after each treatment. Sun exposure can lead to post-inflammatory pigmentation which is the darkening of the skin in the treated areas. This is especially true of clients with darker skin or those that tan very easily.
