Volume Loss

Facial volume loss happens naturally with age, weight loss, sun exposure, smoking, injuries and other medical conditions. As a full and round face begins to lose volume, the face can appear older and thin. Facial skin begins to sag and loses laxity; wrinkles form and the skin under the eye might appear hollow.

At Lazaderm, we offer a variety of facial volume loss treatments that effectively combat the underlying causes of the condition and help our patients maintain a more youthful look.

What Causes Facial Volume Loss?

The loss in facial volume can be attributed to many factors:

  • Reduction in collagen production. Collagen provides support for the skin and gives it a plump and firm look. As collagen reduces over time, the elasticity of the skin also decreases and causes the skin to sag.
  • Shifting Facial Fat: Facial fat around the eyes, cheeks, forehead, temples and mouth may start to shift or disappear, causing volume loss in certain areas. “Apple” cheeks fall downward, causing a hollow look under the eyes. Lips become thinner and lose plumpness. Fat, however, begins to gather in the lower face, causing a double chin and a sagging neck.
  • Weight Loss: Losing weight for those with a naturally thin face can make their face appear thinner, resulting in a worn-out and aged look. Extreme dieting or weight loss that happens quickly can make it challenging for the body to adapt, leaving hanging skin on the cheeks and neck.
People who frequently do cardiovascular exercise for long periods of time can also experience a loss of facial volume. You may naturally lose facial volume loss as you burn off fat in the abdominal region and thighs.
  • Sun Exposure: It has been proven that excess exposure to sun damage can encourage facial volume loss. Sun’s UV rays can reach the epidermis and dermis. When UV rays penetrate the deeper tissues, they speed up the breakdown of collagen and elastin, the two important proteins that build the structure of the skin. As these skin structure components decrease, facial fat can be lost.
Frequent tanning can also expose the skin to harmful UV rays, and damage collagen as well as elastin over time.
  • Natural Aging Process: On average, people can lose 20% to 50% of facial fat as they age. Volume loss is more noticeable in certain areas such as around eyebrows, lips, and cheeks. Skin appears more wrinkled, thinner and aged as facial volume is lost.

Volume Loss in the Cheeks: Cheeks sag and appear flat with loose skin near the jawline.

Volume Loss Under the Eyes: Losing volume under the eyes can result in under eyes looking hollow with dark circles.

Volume Loss in the Lips: As volume is lost in the lips, full lips appear thinner and smaller. Fine lines can appear around the mouth.

Facial Volume Loss Treatments

Our aesthetic clinic offers many minimally-invasive options to add volume back to the face and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Our providers will create a customized treatment plan for patients based on their skin goals.

PDO Thread Lift also known as a non-surgical facelift, uses temporary sutures to lift the skin. Our provider places the threads beneath the skin to lift areas such as the neck, jowls and mid-face regions. The process also encourages the production of collagen. Result lasts up to 2 years.

Microneedling uses tiny needles to puncture the skin and encourages new collagen production. Our microneedling procedure is accompanied by radio frequency to target deeper layers of the skin. With little downtime and hardly any pain, patients return to regular activities the following day or even the evening after their treatment. Results are visible in 3 to 6 months following the treatment.

Dermal Fillers, a safe and quick procedure that can help restore volume and plumpness to facial areas. We offer different types of filler for different areas and purposes. Our fillers are FDA-approved and are comprised of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance found in the body and poly-L-lactic acid - a substance that stimulates collagen production.

The hyaluronic acid fillers volumize different areas of the face internally while collagen fillers increase collagen production.
