Excessive Sweating

Excessive sweating has the medical name hyperhidrosis and it affects 2 to 3% of the population. Hyperhidrosis is sweating more than you need to. We all need to sweat as it helps us regulate our body temperature. Excessive sweating is when you sweat through clothes with normal daily activities. Some patients will sweat through a t-shirt, normal shirt and a sweatshirt even without significant physical activity.

Hyperhidrosis can cause social anxiety and embarrassment. Sweating through clothes at work in social gatherings can be very disconcerting to those who experience it. Many will avoid any situation in which they could be embarrassed. Some students and business people fear giving presentations because they may sweat through their clothes.

Hyperhidrosis can affect the underarms, face, feet and hands. It will include both sides of the body. The hands can be so sweaty that it is difficult to write with a pen or even to turn a doorknob. Excessive sweating may also stain clothes.

Treatment Options:

  • Botox / Dysport – these products can be injected into the affected skin including the hands and feet. Botox is FDA cleared for the treatment of hyperhidrosis. These injections will generally last 6 to 12 months.
