Red or Black Dots on the Legs, Also Known As Strawberry Legs

« View All Blogs

Small black or red dots on the legs, also known as strawberry legs can be a result of multiple different skin issues. They may appear as shaving blisters, black dots on the skin, or darkened pores. Strawberry legs vary from person to person, mostly women, as they can be caused by a variety of seemingly harmless daily practices.

A person applies lotion to their leg, which shows signs of strawberry legs (small dark spots resembling strawberry seeds). The words "Strawberry Legs" are visible at the bottom of the image in white text.

How are Strawberry Legs Caused?

There are three key factors that can lead to black spots on the legs: shaving, clogged pores, and folliculitis.

It’s easy to get razor burn from shaving with an old or dull shaver, or not using shaving cream. Appearing as black dots on the thighs and calves, razor burn can lead to folliculitis or ingrown hairs. These inflamed hairs can cause the skin to look speckled with black dots.

Another cause of strawberry legs are clogged pores. Some individuals are simply born with large pores on their legs. If that’s the case, when they get clogged, the oil inside them is exposed to the air, making it turn black when it oxidizes. This, in turn, creates a dark spotted look on the legs.

Lastly, folliculitis can create a strawberry pattern on the legs. Folliculities is caused by the hairs on the legs becoming inflamed or infected after shaving, waxing or other hair removal methods. This is because the hair follicle is left open and exposed to bacteria, yeast or fungus. Hot tubs can also cause Folliculitis if the PH level has not been regulated. The skin appears to have dark spots since the inflamed hairs on the legs struggle to break through. This condition starts as small red bumps or blisters that later turn into scabs that do not heal as easily.

What to do to Prevent Dark Spots on the Legs

Incorporating mindful practices into your shaving routine will prove successful when preventing strawberry legs. Prior to shaving, exfoliate the legs to remove dead skin cells to prevent ingrown hairs. Add moisutriizing shave gel to your shaving technique as well as shaving in the direction your hair is growing. When you’re out of the shower, moisturize the skin you shaved. Lastly, try out products with salicylic acid or glycolic acid to keep acne conditions from getting worse.
