Botox for Under Eye Wrinkles: Yea or Nay

« View All Blogs

As our patients hit 30, one of their biggest concerns is often aging around the eyes. Under and inner eye wrinkles start appearing more pronounced. They may also start to notice creases under their eyes when they smile.

Our patients also have noted hollowness and dark circles under the eyes, which can cause one to look tired or not well-rested. No matter how much sleep a person gets, the problem seems unresolved.

If these are areas of concern for you, you’ve come to the right place. One of our board-certified aesthetic doctors discusses how BOTOX® is an effective cosmetic treatment for eye wrinkles and a potential treatment for under-eye bags.

A woman with light skin and green eyes is receiving an injection under her eye from a person wearing blue gloves. The procedure appears to be in a medical or cosmetic setting.

Can You Use BOTOX® Under Your Eyes?

BOTOX®, a botulinum toxin type A, is among the most popular aesthetic procedures at Lazaderm®. Compared to fillers that add volume to plump the treated areas, BOTOX® paralyzes certain muscles and leaves smoother-looking and refreshed skin.

Injecting BOTOX® under the eyes for dark circles or hollowness is an off-label use in the US. The FDA hasn’t approved the use of BOTOX® under the eyes for cosmetic purposes. Few studies have looked into the effectiveness of BOTOX® for under-eye treatments, and doctors are conservative about its effectiveness in treating eye wrinkles.

Side Effects of BOTOX® Around the Eyes

The area is very delicate, so there is a high risk of having BOTOX® injected around the eyes. Side effects may include:

-Difficulty closing the eyes

-Eye drooping

-Eye numbness

-Swelling of the lower eyelid making the eyes look puffier.

-Bleeding

-Bruising

-Dizziness

-Fainting

-Pain at the injection site

-Redness

BOTOX® Alternatives to Under-Eye Filler

Hyaluronic acid fillers such as JUVEDERM® and Restylane are the go-to for dermal fillers. These under eye treatments fill in the shadow and reduce the appearance of dark circles. If you develop mild swelling under the eyes or eye puffiness, fillers and fat transfers can also help blend the swelling and remove the excess fat from under the eye.

Laser treatments like the Fraxel laser or Lumenis CO2 can also tighten the skin or brighten the dark/bluish under-eye colors.

What Can BOTOX® Treat?

BOTOX® is FDA-approved to address aging signs around the eyes, including glabellar lines, also known as frown lines, and crow’s feet. Our team of experts at Lazaderm® knows how to treat eye wrinkles and has extensive knowledge of the primary BOTOX® eye injection sites.

What to Expect from a BOTOX® Treatment

During treatment, a BOTOX® practitioner will inject it into the areas of concern, which may include the forehead, frown lines, or crow’s feet lines.

This is the best procedure for under eye wrinkles as it only takes a few minutes with hardly any downtime. Many patients have BOTOX® injections over lunchtime and return to work or normal activities immediately.

The number of units of BOTOX® needed to achieve desired results varies depending on the treated areas and the aesthetic goal of each patient. During the initial consultation, our board-certified BOTOX® doctors at Lazaderm® will examine your facial anatomy and aging concerns and determine the number of units necessary to achieve your best results.

Patients start seeing the results within a few days. The optimal effect will appear within 2 weeks. Results from a BOTOX® injection lasts about 3 to 4 months.

It’s recommended that you schedule a follow-up BOTOX® injection every three to four months to maintain smoother and younger skin.
